Day 29 - Philadelphia

NYC  - This morning Mike made Kathryn a Crepe Mother’s Day breakfast since they are expecting a baby boy.  We were lucky enough to join them and Ryan excited because he loves crepes. We quickly loaded up our belongings (except for our camera) and headed out of town.  We picked up our car from the parking garage and went to type in the address of our next destination, only to realize that someone from the parking garage had messed with our GPS and locked the system.  The Navigation was asking for a PIN# and I never set up a PIN.  We eventually resorted to plan B, using our iphones for navigation. On top of all of the great drama, our car started shaking uncontrollably.  We knew there was something wrong, but once again, nothing we could do since everything was closed because it was Sunday.

Philadelphia, PA  - We figured we could make it to our next destination, Philadelphia, and deal with it all there. We arrived in time to take a tour of Independence Hall and see the Liberty Bell as well as Franklin Square (where Ben Franklin lived and worked).  Independence Hall is the location of the signing of both the Declaration of Independence and Constitution.  We really enjoyed re-learning these pivotal events in U.S. history.  To stand in the very room where such important events in the founding took place really brought them to life and gave us a sense of patriotism and appreciate for Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, George Washington, James Madison, and all of the other founding fathers. The 13 colonies were acting as independent nations in a way, and there was a lot of debate as to whether or not there should be a national government.  Eventually the Constitution was signed in 1787 and Philadelphia was the original capital of the United States.

(each of the colonies had a table and these chairs were filled with the founding fathers)

A trip to Philadelphia would not be complete without experiencing a Philly cheese steak.  Ryan and I went into South Philly and did the ultimate taste test between the two premier rival cheese steak places, Geno’s and Pat’s. These two shops literally sit 30 yards from one another. So, we grabbed one of each and some cheese fries to top in off. They were fairly similar sandwiches but there were a few differences. Pat’s has more meat and it is chopped up with more onion in it. Geno’s has a couple flat slices of steak and a bit more cheese wiz. The verdict: Ry is a Pat’s fan and I preferred Geno’s so if you get a chance to try one day… who do you trust more?

Pictures compliments of our iphones.
