New York City – Ry and I are so grateful for our vehicle navigation system. It has been amazing to have during this road trip. We type in an address is it tells us exactly where to go. If we are listening to music it even turns down the music so we can hear the voice tell us where to go. Today however, we mistyped an address in the GPS and we ended up in Brooklyn instead of the heart of Manhattan. This small little mistake costs us several hours because the traffic was awful.
After arriving a little behind schedule we headed straight to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) on Central Park. Ryan is much more a museum fan than I am. He could spend hours and hours walking through one museum. My short attention span can only handle an hour before I am either out the door or asleep on a bench. However, there were so many amazing things to see in the Met, so I was able to last a little longer than normal. The Egyptian Exhibit was my favorite by far. To think that they built enormous buildings and communities 2,000+ BC was mind-boggling. The mummies were awesome and I couldn’t comprehend how they were able to craft such amazing things for their day. They had the most beautiful detailed jewelry, pottery, tombs, and even a temple that came all the way from Egypt.
Ryan enjoyed the medieval knights armor as well as the European art by Van Gough, Monet, Renoir, and Picasso. There was even a Michelangelo Sculpture named the “Little Archer.” The art was endless and you could easily spend a week in this museum.
After leaving the Met, we strolled through Central Park and walked past the row house and fountains. Central Park is truly a gem in that City. I don’t know how anyone could live there without something like Central Park. It is a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the City.
We then met up with Kathryn, a friend of Ryan’s from Spokane who he was close with at BYU. Kathryn and her husband Mike recommeded dinner at Shake Shack. I can’t believe what I am about to say, but I think Shake Shack beats In-N-Out in the burger joint department. The burgers had bigger meat patties and the mouthwatering buns. The buns reminded me of the buns from Fuddruckers. The only thing I wish the burger had was pickles and onions. They only put tomatoes and lettuce on them.
After dinner we wanted to see the city at night so we headed to Lincoln Center. The water fountain in front of Lincoln Center glows at night. I hadn’t ever seen it at night. It was the perfect spot to just sit and soak up the surroundings, including the LDS temple which was just across the street. We also stopped by Magnolia bakery on the way. I told Ryan I wanted to go in and get a cupcake and he just laughed thinking it was my typical “something sweet” craving. I explained to him that Magnolia is the battleground against Sprinkles, our favorite spot in Newport Beach, CA. We got a couple of cupcakes. It is a cozy little bakery in the City, but I must say the cupcakes are good but no competition for Sprinkles.
That night we headed to Mike and Kathryn’s place. They were nice enough to let us crash on their living room floor. It’s always fun seeing how people live in the City. Tight quarters and expensive rent all to be right in the heart of the world. We can’t wait to explore the city tomorrow.
