Cape Cod – We drove all along Cape Cod stopping randomly at lighthouses, sand cliffs, and beaches along the way. Overall, Martha’s Vineyard was our favorite part of Cape Cod. Provincetown is a small town at the very tip of Cape Cod. The commercial street is lined with shops, restaurants, candy and ice cream parlors. It was definitely the most flamboyant town we’ve visited, very artsy. Every store in the town had rainbow flags flying and the blue and yellow equals sign symbol. Let’s just say Ryan was getting lots of looks. Haha.
Newport RI – One word for Newport, RI: SPEECHLESS. If you ever drive through Rhode Island I suggest you drive through Newport rather than take the faster roads through Providence. Families like the Vanderbilts had homes in Newport on Bellevue Street. I should say mansions or estates rather than homes. The homes are breathtaking and sit atop the cliff-lined coast. We got to see part of the 3.5 mile path that runs along the cliffs. People can walk/run and view all of the gorgeous homes on one side and the beautiful coastline on the other. Also in Newport is the Tennis Hall of Fame. We stopped there but they were just about to close so we didn’t go inside. There is a grass court at the hall of fame along with the museum. Ryan loves tennis and was bummed we didn’t get to check it out.
Mystic Seaport, CT – This town has an amazing Maritime museum with old tugboats but again we just missed it. That’s what we get for trying to visit so many cool places in a day. We didn’t have much time to do much more than just drive through this city on our way to New Haven.
New Haven, CT – Home to Yale University, we stopped through New Haven to see my friend Kaeli. Even though Kaeli was right in the middle of finals she still took the time to show us around campus. Kaeli showed us her workstation and the classrooms she spends most of her time in. She even treated us to dinner on her meal card. We ate at the Commons, which is a cafeteria that looked like it came right out of the movie Harry Potter. Kaeli, made sure we sat next to the large painting of George H.W. Bush. She laughed and said I was probably the only person on the campus who likes him. Both George H.W. and George W. attended Yale. Kaeli was telling us about the secret societies, similar to fraternities, but on a much more intense level. One of the most famous and prestigious societies is Skull and Bones. Both Bushs’ and John Kerry are members of the Skull and Bones Society. They meet in a padlocked windowless building. They have secret combinations and codes along with private homes on distant islands. Later that evening we chatted for a while with Kaeli, while we did some much needed laundry in her dorm building basement. The buildings are ancient and it was fun to tour the campus and even visit the Yale library to see an original Guttenberg Bible. The Yale campus consists of old, gothic stone buildings. It felt like we were on the campus of a school like Oxford. It was so fun to hang with Kaeli and she even let us crash on her dorm room floor. Thanks Kaeli! You’re the best.
